2010년대 후반부터 인테리어 업계에서 쓰이기 시작한 것으로 알려진 합성어로, 일본의 "간소함 속의 정갈함"과 북유럽의 "따뜻한 기능주의"가 공통으로 가진 절제된 감각에서 접점을 찾았다고 설명됩니다. 두 전통 모두 장식을 덜어내고 재료 그 자체를 드러낸다는 점에서 잘 어울립니다.

가구는 다리가 짧고 좌식에 가까운 낮은 높이를 선호하며, 밝은 자작나무 대신 월넛처럼 짙은 톤의 원목을 씁니다. 색은 화이트·베이지에 카키·차콜 같은 흙빛을 더해 스칸디나비아보다 한 톤 더 차분합니다. 장지문이나 격자 스크린처럼 일본식 요소, 도자기 화병에 나뭇가지 하나를 꽂는 정도의 절제된 소품이 포인트로 들어갑니다.

두 스타일을 어설프게 섞으면 밝은 스칸디나비아 가구와 짙은 일본풍 소품이 따로 놀 수 있습니다. 목재 톤을 하나로 통일하고, 소품 수를 의도적으로 적게 유지하는 것이 재팬디를 재팬디답게 만드는 핵심입니다.
