A Material motion pattern. Unlike a push it does not drag the whole screen: the outgoing screen moves only **a little (about 30 px)** while fading, and the incoming one arrives from the opposite side by the same distance while sharpening. That short move plus fade conveys "neighbours on the same axis."
The axis carries meaning. **X** is stepping (onboarding 1 → 2, steppers), **Y** is vertical flow (the next group in a scrolling list), and **Z** is depth (one level up or down a hierarchy, with a scale change).
A push (→ push-transition) hauls the entire screen and feels heavy; a shared axis cuts the travel and feels light. Keep enough motion for the direction to read, or it collapses into a plain fade.
When to use
Use it for ordered or hierarchical moves — step forms, onboarding, settings sub-pages — and make the direction mean "forward."
